Thanks 'andrewmason' .. unfortunately the problem seems to be that my particular flavor of gmail (courtesy of my ISP .. TDS.NET) requires that I use authenticated sessions, specifically SSL and TLS in my email client (Thunderbird) and this is somehow being extended to outgoing Notepager Pro SMTP transmissions. Techsupport @ Notepager acknowlwdges tht this is the problem. If you have discovered a work around, please give me some more specifics as I have had to revert to total use of email in lieu of Notepager Pro.

All of a sudden my outgoing pages via SMTP are failing. I am using a registered version of NotePager Pro on a XP Home SP3 system. When I run the connection wizard to test the protocols, SMTP now fails, but SNPP passes and WCTP fails. My ISP (TDS.NET) has recently transitioned to providing email service via Google's GMAIL.COM server and my email service via GMAIL.COM is working, using my incoming email address of JOHN.RANDLE@TDS.NET with an outgoing SMTP server address of SMTP.GMAIL.COM on port 465. I have tried setting my relay server address to SMTP.GMAIL.COM:465 and setting my username to JOHN.RANDLE@TDS.NET and it is not working. I have also tried using directly DNS addressees of 216.165.129.158 and 216.170.153.146 as provided by the TDS.NET trouble desk but those do not work either.
HELP!!!! Where do I go from here?[/b]

Thank you again ... however, I am not using PageGate ... but NotePage Pro. I do not see any log files in the NotePage Pro directory, but examining the npp database file in that directory I did find a np_messages table that appears to contain what I am looking for. What are the operating parameters for this table (i.e. what is its max size before it starts over-writing entries, etc).

Thank You again!! You have been very helpful in resolving my SNPP issues.
Now, perhaps one final question .... is there a means of getting a permanent file/record of pages sent that could only be deleted by a "super user" or "system administrator"? It appears that when a normal user logs off the W2K system and then later logs back on the sent record has been purged. Since there are many different people/accounts on the W2K system it is necessary to have an audit procedure in place to preclude abuse.

Thanks again .. your advice was excellent and very timely. Unfortunately I am now running into a SORBS "reject" problem (www.sorbs.net) when I try to send a smtp page to a metrocall (page.metrocall.com) subscriber. So I thought I would try the snpp setup for metrocall (snpp.metrocall.com), but I find that setup requires a host and password field ... I tried using snpp.metrocall.com for the host field and left the password blank and that did not work. I would prefer to not use the TAP setup if possible. Any further suggestions?

Thanks for the quick response. Should I do the install under a W2K administrator account or under a W2K user (power user) account?

I am trying to install Notepage Pro on a W2K PRO desktop such that the "administrator" would have write/modify access to the database (carrier and recipient) and that normal (non-power) users could only run the program and send pages. I initially tried the installation while logged on as administrator, but was unable to get Notepage Pro to run under a normal user account .. even after granting that user "full control" privilidges under W2K (Notepage Pro reported that it was unable to lock file??). I then removed Notepage Pro form the W2K system and did the installation from a user account with "power user" (but non-administrator) permissions and then set up separate user and superuser passwords to control access separately to the program and to the carrier and recipient files. The Notepage Pro does does require a user password in order to execute the program. However, even after changing the user permissions back to those of a normal (non-power) user, the user is able to change the carrier and recipient files without entering the separate superuser password. Any suggestions on how to properly set up the system to accomplish the above will be appreciated.

Thank you .. that did it. Once I went back to the setup wizard and added a name for the sender the page went right through.

I seem to be having some difficulty with my Carrier setup for SMTP service. I have been able to successfully send a page from notepage pro to my personal email account on my ISP (tds.net) by setting the local domain for the TDS carrier to be "tds.net" with direct delivery specified. However, trying to send a page to my cell phone (Virgin Mobile) results in a "sucessful" delivery indication on the dialer log .. but nothing as nothing is being delivered .. even through the connection log shows "success" and a subsequent email directly from my email client to the same cell phone number is delivered with a minimal delay. I initially thought that some form of authentication would be required with the local domain email server to send a smtp page via that server, however that does not appear to be the case as you can see from the attached log.. you will note that the initial attempt to connect to the mail server for Virgin Mobile fails and the system automatically switched to my outgoing smpt server....
