Whilst the BT PSTN SMS system is dial-up, it is not possible to use a normal modem.

The international standard for Fixed Line SMS is ETSI ES 201 912.

A modem is available that does support PSTN SMS, it has an identical AT command set to a GSM modem. www.ntstelecom.co.uk/SMSmodem.htm

Outside the United States, the best way of sending SMS over the PSTN is to use a Fixed Line SMS modem. These are able to send around a 1,000 messages an hour, and will show the sender as being your normal landline.

The NTS Telecom Fixed Line SMS can directly replace a GSM modem, as it has an identical AT command set. In addition to business messaging, it is commonly used for the reporting of network and environmental alarms.
