Thanks for letting me know that all successful use of NotePager has as far as you know been only with mobile/cellular SMS. That will save me lots of time, as I have already done all the experimenting I know how to do, with HyperTerminal.

I have come across some information indicating that contrary to posts in the previous tread I may in fact have been using the correct number in spite of not getting a traditional modem synchronization tone. You will recall in the prior tread I reported hearing "two chirps separated by a second or two of silence." This was taken by technical support as an indication that I was using an incorrect number for the SMSC.

If you look at the October 13 post in this forum you will find that someone with far more technical expertise that I is saying that with fixed-network SMSC's one indeed may expect to hear, not two-three seconds of modem tones, but "2 tones separated by a couple of seconds."

This writer further identifies this as a "TAS (Terminal Equipment Alerting Signal)," but even he can't figure out what to do with it! The thread stops there without anyone reporting a successful conclusion. From the preceding, I get the impression it's going to take a lot more than my personal ability with HyperTerminal to make a connection. Thank you for your confidence in advising what I may do to trouble-shoot this by myself, but I am only an advanced user, not a programmer.

I will continue to check on the internet to see if anyone has discovered a software solution for fixed-network SMS. If you are able, let me know when there is sufficient demand for your programmers to get NotePager working with this protocol. I will leave the reply-notification box checked.

In the meantime, if what I found is correct, you may want to tell potential users that while NotePager is a great program, it is only for those who have mobile/cellular SMS. Good luck to your programmers in working out a solution!

This forum contains many reports of users having difficulty with the SMS center connection having a successful outcome after being directed to correct setup strings, and so forth.

Please tell me if you know, for a fact, that some of these successful outcomes included NotePager users having fixed network (as opposed to mobile or cellular) SMS.

If you can answer affirmatively, I will proceed and hopefully have the same favorable outcome. On the other hand, if all the successes so far are with mobile-cellular SMS, please let me know that, as well. Thanks!

P.S.: The Subject of this thread has been changed for accuracy: I now believe I have not been getting as far as the handshake itself, before the server drops the connection.

First, I can see from reviewing this thread, I neglected at the outset to specify the make and model of my modem. In reviewing previous posts, most of your successful attempts to help users get through to their service centers start with your knowing this information.

Second, I may have moved the discussion in the wrong direction with my concern that NotePage32 was continually resetting the modem to phase-shift modulation, once I found out that fixed-network SMS's usually run with Frequency Shift Keying modulation. On more careful reading of the supplied AT command strings I see that two or three of them do, in fact, turn on the FSK modulation, later in the string, with the B1 command.

Perhaps it is best that I start a new thread or the resulting post will become too long and confusing to help other users who may have the same problem. Then, when a new and more brief thread (hopefully!) leads to a successful conclusion, you may wish to delete this one.

Ouch! The connection speed, of course, should have been 1200 baud, not 12 kb. I am looking forward to your reply on how to try a connection with the FSK protocol. I am hoping to at last get a connection. I hope FNSMS uses the same data format as mobile SMS.

I have found references saying that FNSMSC's (Fixed Network SMS Centers) operate with FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) modulation, at 12KB. Am I correct, this is different from the phase-shift modulation used by the more-common mobile SMS gateways?

According to information in the Windows Modem control panel (advanced options) it is necessary to match the modulation of sending and receiving modems or the communication will fail. There is an option here for selecting the older, Bell-type of modulation. (The code it inserts may not be correct, B0 vs. B1, but this is another matter.)

NotePager 32 does allow a selection of Hayes AT command strings, but unfortunately all include the command &F, which, if I am correct, will reset the modem to the factory default of phase-shift modulation everytime the string is sent, no matter what has been selected in Windows. It is my understanding the modem always gives preference to the last-sent AT string, no matter what was previously set, and I assume NotePager sends the string immediately before each message.

Attempts to alter the command string sent by NotePager 32: I have found that no matter what I enter into the top of the NotePager drop-down modem command menu in Carriers->Edit, it always defaults to one of the pre-determined strings, all of which begin by returning to modem to factory default settings. Your comments and assistance will be appreciated.

Siemens technical support provided some information. Apparently on Portugal Telecom's fixed-network SMS service, the number listed as a service center (manual, PT tech support and screen of cordless phone) does not provide a modem tone.

Exactly how the connection can be made under these circumstances was not clearly explained. When I try to listen on an extension to hear what is going on, the process fails and reverts to a busy signal. I hear modem tones from the phone but only 'chirps' from the service center.

Unfortunately, this makes it impossible to use your very fine software. Eventually someone else will run into the same problem and an answer will be found. Please reply at that time, or as soon as you have any other ideas.

I am attempting to monitor SMS activity with HyperTerminal connected to the same line as the C100, and I have the laptop's modem set up so I can monitor the audio for what is happening. I definitely hear the two chirps (must be coming from the SMS center) at the outset of the handshake.

However, for reasons I do not know, the handshake does not go to completion when HyperTerminal is on-line in parallel with the C100. As a result under these conditions no SMS message is sent and when the handshake fails, the busy signal comes on within a second.

I also am not seeing the expected activity on the terminal screen as I had hoped. All I have been getting is a RING when the SMS comes back to the C100.

I am not an expert on setting up this type of connection and would appreciate any help you and you colleagues may offer. Would you agree that the above indicates an active phone connection, rather than a wrong number?

The number is listed in the manual and was confirmed with technical support from the phone company.

I have discovered that if I append either the digit '0' or '1' to the end of the number, instead of silence followed by a busy signal, I get two high-pitched 'chirps' first. Is this consistent with the server attempting a handshake?

You may recall that there is a cryptic '*' at the end of the SMS center's number when displayed on the handpiece's screen. I decided to experiment by replacing it with various other keys.

I realize you are trying to cover all possibilities, but I double-checked and the phone number I am trying to send to in this test is in the Recipients menu and the SMS center's number is in the Carriers menu. Also, the format of the SMS center number is totally different from that of a normal telephone number.

No, neither with the plain standard phone-company phone, nor with the new cordless. There doesn't seem to be any problem receiving audio with either, and the modem tones are of course well within the audio range (so far as I know).

You're welcome. I suspected a misunderstanding when I saw the description of the other protocol.

The response of the SMS center remains the same as before: "After dialing there is a brief pause (perhaps one second) followed by the busy signal." No modem tones.

Now, the question is how to figure out what the SMS center server is expecting before it completes the connection. What do you make of the asterisk following the center's number on the phone's display?

Would it be possible/of any benefit to put Window's Hyper-Terminal on-line while the phone is dialing? If not, has anyone ever heard of this problem on other systems, and what solution do you recommend? Until I get the modem tones, if I read you correctly, NotePager won't function.

If it makes it any clearer, I am accessing the SMS center through my laptop and 56K modem. Do you still want me to try the other version, or does what I've posted indicate we should perservere with NotePager 32?

I may have caused confusion by mentioning that I tested the SMS center with the Siemens cordless (not mobile or cellular!) phone. This was just to make sure that at this moment the center was not 'permanently busy' or otherwise out of order.

When I attempted to set the suggested protocol, the message of course said I couldn't, but the explanation seemed to indicate it should be used with a wireless modem or a mobile phone, and I am using neither of these.

I will try this and let you know what happens. However, in the event it makes a difference, I should have mentioned in my original post that I am using NotePager 32.

You are correct. After dialing the number there is a slight pause followed by a busy signal. However, the Siemens C100 is able to use the number without problems ... I just sent an SMS to myself. Any ideas?

Dear Tech Support,

As you can see from the log below, I'm getting a handshake failure and need your help to find correct parameters. I listed two trials with a slight variation on the telephone number: one with an asterisk at the end (as shown on my Siemens C100 on-screen menu) and the other without, as listed in my printed Siemens manual. Apparently it makes no difference, as both trials failed. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
