In this tutorial, we will be going over what the GetSerial module is, how it works, and how to configure the basic options.

Before we begin the configuration, let me first explain what the GetSerial module is and how it works.

The GetSerial module is a part of PageGate that can monitor a serial port or COM port for a data stream.

For example, if you are integrating with a server monitoring utility or a nursing station call system, those types of programs have the ability to output data via serial port and RS-232 cable.

The GetSerial module can monitor the serial port, read in that data stream, parse the data contained within it, and send the data out an SMS message or page to a mobile device.

So, the first step is to run the program, so go to your start menu, go to programs, find the PageGate program group, and left click on the PageGate Admin.

When the PageGate Admin comes up, you should see both sections: groups and display groups.

We'll do the groups first. Right click on the groups section, then left click on Add.

In the Description field, you can name the group whatever you please.

After giving the group a name, once you left click in the Group field, it should fill in for you.

You will notice the Advanced Options and we will get to those in a moment.

Left click on Apply to add this group into the list.

Once the group has been added, left click on the + next to the group and go to the Members section.

Before we begin, there are two different types of failovers. There is a carrier level failover and a recipient level failover.

The carrier level failover tells PageGate that in the event that a carrier is unreachable via one protocol, it should attempt to deliver the messages through a secondary protocol or method.

The recipient level failover tells PageGate that in the event that messages fail to a specific recipient, those messages should instead be delivered to another recipient.

To set the carrier level failover, left click on the + next to the carriers section.

The first step is to run the PageGate Admin on the Primary Server, so go to your start menu on the Primary Server, go to Programs, find the PageGate program group, and left click on PageGate Admin.

Once in the admin, left click on the + next to the Database Section.

In the Database section, left click on the Synchronization section.

Since this is the Primary Server, left click on the Export section.

In the export section, you should see these options.

The first option is Enable Automatic Export.

If this is enabled, the primary server will export the data that the secondary servers will then import to synchronize their data.

The next option is Export interval. This is the number of minute between synchronizations. By default, this is 60 minutes but you can set it as low as 1 minute, if you need to.

The Carrier option allows you to run a report of sent messages that have gone out to a particular carrier, allows you to view all pending messages for a carrier, or allows you to see the statistics for a given carrier.

The Connector option allows you to run a report of sent messages that have gone out to a particular connector, allows you to view all pending messages for a connector, or allows you to see the statistics for a given connector.

Once in the admin, there are many different ways to cancel a message.

To perform a global cancel that will cancel all pending messages, right click on the Carriers, Recipients, or Groups section then left click on Cancel Messages.

When you select that option, you will see this screen.

Cancel all Past due messages tells the program to cancel any scheduled messages that have failed to go out.

Cancel all pending messages tells the program to clear the pending message queue.

Cancel all repeating messages tells the program to cancel all scheduled messages from the PageGate Client.

Put a check in Cancel all pending messages only and left click on Apply.

If log to disk is checked, the program will write the log files to the hard drive. If this is unchecked, PageGate will not log anything.

Below that, we have Logging Level. More often than not, you want to leave this on Debug, which is the most detailed logging type. If you want, though, you can have PageGate write the Detailed log or keep only a brief summary of information in its logs.

After selecting your recipients, type the message you would like sent in the Message Text box.

The Ad-Hoc Template allows you to create a paging website where the user may enter any ID or Email address in the provided field instead of having a static list of recipient to select from. You should notice that the first line of the file is the recipient the message should be delivered to.

The second line identifies who sent the message.

Now I'm going to pull up an example of a nonstandard ASCII data file.

You should notice that the data looks nothing like the standard file. Even though the data is in different places and parsed by different strings, the program can still read this data file in, parse the data, and send out the message.

Before we begin, it is important to note that NONE OF YOUR PASSWORDS SHOULD BE THE SAME.

Each level of credentials in the program needs their own unique password.

Once in the program, go to Tools - Settings - Passwords. In the passwords section, you'll see that we have three different levels of security.

In order of importance, they are Administrative, Super User, and User.

The first is the Administrative credentials.

If you enter a password here, any time a user tries to access the program setup screens, such as adding, editing, or deleting carriers, recipients, or groups, and the program configuration in the import, export, and setup menus.

You will notice that we have four main types of reports: Sent Messages, Scheduled Messages, Statistics, and List.

The first three types of reports: Sent Messages, Scheduled Messages, and Statistics, can be filtered by the Recipient of the message, by the date and time the messages were sent, or by the carrier the messages were sent to.

For example, Left click on the Recipient option.

We can choose to run a report based on all recipients or only selected recipients.

Highlight the subjects of this report. Below that, you can specify the date and time range to view.

For example, I want to know all messages sent out for the last year, so I am going to change the date to this time last year.

Below that, you should see the Summary, Details, and totals Only options.

In the Advanced Message Options, you'll notice three sections: Send Message When, Resend Message Every, and Stop Sending Message.

In the first section, you can set the date and time you would like the message sent.

For example, I'm going to say that I'd like this message delivered at 9:00 AM on September 2nd, 2009.

After setting the Message Start options, you need to choose if you want this message to be repeated every so often or if you just want the message delivered once.

You should also see the On-Call group checkbox but we'll get to that later.

Left click on Apply to add the group in and you should see this prompt.

Now that we have the group entered in, go to Groups - Members.

Before we actually perform the update, we'll need to do a backup of the NotePager Pro database.

This will insure that we don't lose any data in the transition.

The first step is to double click on My Computer.

In My Computer, locate your hard drive, usually Local Disk (C:), and double click on it.

In Local Disk (C:), locate the Program Files directory and double click on it.

In the Program Files directory, scroll through until you see the NotePager Pro directory and double click on it.

In the NotePager Pro directory, you should see a file named npp.mdb Right click on this file and left click on Copy.

Then close the file browser and right click on a blank portion of your desktop, then left click on Paste.

You can run the program by accessing it from your start menu or double clicking on the shortcut on your desktop.

If this is the first time you run NotePager Pro, it will ask you if you would like to register or continue.

If you would like to use the trial version, left click on Continue.

If this is the first time you've run the program, you'll be prompted by the Setup Wizard.

For the purposes of this tutorial, left click on Yes. In the first step of the setup wizard, it will ask you what you would like to use for the sender's name.

This name is what will show up on the recipients device as who sent the message and there are three available options.

If you don't want the program to send any senders information, select the first option.

In this tutorial, we will be showing you how to download and install NotePager Pro.

The first step is to visit our website, www.notepage.net

Once there, you may need to scroll down a little but you should see the NotePager Pro section in the center of the page.

In the NotePager Pro section, you will notice that we have three options: More Information, Download, and Buy Now.

For the purposes of this tutorial, left click on the Download option.

It may take the website a few seconds to respond but you should see this prompt come up.

You'll want to left click on the Save option and, when asked where you want to save it, be sure to select the Desktop for easy reference later.

Now that we have the NotePager Pro installation file downloaded, double click on the file to run it.

You may be prompted by this open file security warning.

If so, left click on the Run option.

The installation will extract and give you this prompt.

Left click on Install NotePager Pro continue.

Welcome to the tutorial on how to register NotePager Pro. The first step is to run the program.

So, find the icon on your desktop, and double click on it.

When the program comes up, if you are using the unregistered trial version, you will see this box.

If you would like to purchase the program, left click on the Register button then left click on the Secure Online Ordering button.

If you have already purchased and wish to register the program, left click on the Enter Registration Information button.

When you left click on that button, the program will then ask you for the registration information.

The registration information must be typed exactly as it was originally sent to you.
