Tracking Animals with SMS |
Oftentimes, we think of the conservation of the old as incongruous with the use of newer technology like mobile devices. This is far from the case; in fact, GPS technology is being combined with text messaging to track both wildlife and livestock, a useful tool to keep an eye on both the farm animals we depend on and the increasing number of endangered or threatened species.
One device conservationalists are using to keep tabs on wildlife is cellular GPS collars. Cellular collars are affixed to animals, which then use GPS to calculate the animal's coordinates.

Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text Messaging |
Airline pilots and air traffic controllers are on schedule to switch to text communications at most of the nation's busiest airports by the end of the year, a milestone that holds the potential to reduce delays, prevent errors and save billions of dollars in fuel cost, says the Federal Aviation Administration.
Controllers and pilots will still use their radios for quick exchanges like clearance for takeoff and in emergencies and situations where time is critical. But the nations air traffic system is gradually shifting to text messages for a majority of flying instructions.

A Virtual Text Messaging Counselor |
Struggling to meet the rising demand for mental health services on campuses, colleges turn to online platforms and text messaging services. Experts are divided on the effectiveness of these approaches.
The platform is one of several digital tools -- from online portals to text messaging services and smartphone apps -- that colleges are using to provide wider access to mental health services as campus health centers struggle to meet the rising counseling demands of students. Use of what’s called telepsychology for mental health services is increasing, according a survey released earlier this year by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors. In the 2013-14 academic year, 6.6 percent of counseling centers reporting using telepsychology in some form. The following year, the figure was up to 9.1 percent.

You Will Not Believe How These People Are Texting |
Most of us know textings being used for just about everything these days, but some of the new ways texting is being applied to our lives still manage to surprise us. For instance, have you ever twirled a piece of hair to send a text, or brushed away a rogue strand to take pictures on your cell phone? Or imagined one day dairy cows might text their farmers to let them know how they are doing? Neither had we, but new technologies have allowed these seeming absurdities, and more, to become realities.

Text Message Notification for Web Surveys |
Text messaging has grown in popularity in recent years, leading survey researchers to explore ways texts might be used as tools in the public opinion research process. In the U.S., at least, researchers must obtain consent from respondents before they are permitted to send an automated text. This means that text messaging can not be used in standard one-off surveys of the public ȑ surveys where pollsters reach out to a randomly sampled list of telephone numbers. Texting also presents measurement challenges in terms of offering only limited space for writing questions and requiring respondents to type rather than click. While these factors limit the utility of texting for interviewing itself, texting has been explored as a means of alerting people to complete a survey, such as by sending them a link to a web survey.
