When was Text Messaging Invented?
Knowing when text messaging was invented is entirely a matter of perspective. For example, the invention of telegraph was the type of first real time text messaging. Much later, the first type of what might consider modern text messaging was introduced in Sweden in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which gave rise to a type of messaging called MBS and NMT. While MBS and NMT have long since become obsolete, they paved the way for the creation of the modern SMS. While there is no specific, concrete date for when the first SMS was sent and received, the concept of SMS or Short Messaging Service was introduced at a Franco-German cooperative project proposal in Oslo in 1985.
