How Do You Switch PageGate from a Runtime to a Service?

How do you switch PageGate from a runtime to a service?

Before we proceed, the following changes can only be made on the PageGate Admin ON the server. These changes cannot be made from any workstation admin consoles.

The first step is to run the PageGate Admin, so go to your start menu, go to Programs, find the PageGate program group, and left click on PageGate Admin.

Once in the admin, left click on the + next to Program.

In the Program section, left click on Settings.

By default, PageGate runs as an application.

To change the program to run as a Windows Service, move the dot down to Windows Service and click on Apply.

When you do, the program will prompt you for credentials.

Before we proceed, PageGate is not asking for credentials to any internal security portion of the program. In order for PageGate to create the system services, it needs to access a portion of the Windows Registry that may be protected.

On most systems, you can use the built in system account for Windows, which means you can leave the username and password fields blank and left click on Apply.

If, however, you are on a domain, you may need to specify an administrative username and password here.

After clicking on apply, you should see a prompt that tells you that it is verifying the account information, Updating Services, then Switching Run styles.

After the Switching Run Style goes away, if you look next to the clock in Windows, you should see an icon of a pager.

Left click on that icon and it will bring up four options, the first of which is Start and the last of which is Stop.

Left click on Start.

Since you're running PageGate as a Windows Service now,t hat's the last time you have to do that. From now on, the program will automatically start itself when the computer is powered on.

To switch PageGate's run style back to an application, go back into the Admin, then go back to the Program - Settings section.

Under the Run PageGate As section, move the dot to Application and click on Apply.

When it has finished switching the run style, you should see the icon of the pager disappear from the system tray.

When running PageGate as an application, you'll need to manually start the PageGate Server each time you want it to run by going to your start menu, go to programs, find the PageGate program group, and left click on PageGate Server.

That should put the icon back in your system tray, indicating that the PageGate Server is running.

Here is a video that will walk you through the process of switching from a runtime to a service.

How Do I Send Messages Using a GSM Modem?

How do I Send Messages via GSM?

For people simply trying to send messages to a phone that is on a GSM network, then the first step is to find out what protocols the phones carrier accepts for text (SMS) messages. In the US the most popular protocols are TAP (via analog modem), SNPP (internet), WCTP (internet), and SMTP (internet). In Europe and other countries the most popular protocols are TAP (via analog modem), UCP (via analog modem), and SMTP (via internet).

The way text messaging typically works is that you send a text message from your computer (using a program like NotePager Pro or PageGate) to the carrier (the company that provides the phone/pager service). The carrier then sends the message to the correct device. The typical way to send messages to the carrier is via regular analog modem, or over the Internet. However, you first must find out what protocols the carrier will accept. We have a list of many of the popular carriers and their settings here:

http://www.notepage.net/support.htm

Sending messages through a wireless modem or mobile phone using the GSM specification (like the original poster in this thread) is a little different. In this setup the messages go from your wireless modem or phone to the destination device without any phone lines or internet connections.

Issue: GetWeb not properly submitting messages on Windows Server 2003

Issue: GetWeb not properly submitting messages on Windows Server 2003

The first thing you need to do is make sure you have at least Service Pack 1 for Windows 2003 Server installed. After you have SP1, do the following:

1) In the IIS Manager, choose the Web Server Extensions section and set the "Allow All Unknown CGI Extensions" option to "Allow."

Change 2:
1) Go into the IIS Manager

2) Open your server object

3) Open 'Application Pools'

4) Right-click on 'DefaultAppPool'

5) Choose 'Properties'

6) Select the 'Identity' tab

7) Select the 'Configurable' option (default credentials should already be there)

8) Apply your changes

After you do that, it should work. If it doesn't, try the following:
------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: If your instance of Server 2003 created an AdminScripts directory instead of a Scripts directory under InetPub, please do this first:

a) Go into the IIS Manager.
b) Expand your Server.
c) Expand the WebSites section.
d) Right click on DefaultWebSite
e) Move your mouse over new and click on Virtual Directory
f) Click on Next.
g) In the Alias section, type the word: Scripts
h) Click on Next.
i) In the Path section, click on Browse.
j) Browse to your InetPub directory and click on Make New Directory.
h) Name the directory Scripts.
i) Select the scripts directory and click on ok.
j) When giving the directory permissions, you need to give it Read, Write, Run Scripts, and Execute.
k) After you've created the new Virtual Directory, you will need to change your CGI Data Path in PageGate to c:\inetpub\scripts
--------------------------------------------------------------

Change 3:

1) Go into the IIS Manager.
2) Go to your server in the list.
3) Right click on the folder you've got the webgate.exe file located in (generally scripts).
4) Left click on properties.
5) Click on the tab that says Virtual Directory.
6) Click on the configuration button.
7) Click on the Application Extentions section.
8) In the Application Extentions, click on Add.
9) Browse out to the webgate.exe file and select it.
10) In the extention area, type in: .exe
11) Leave the rest of the options as they are and click on OK.
12) You'll need to restart the IIS Service after you do this.

How do I configure PageGate to use a direct serial connection to my messaging terminal?

1) Attach the Paging Terminal to the computer running PageGate with a serial cable, make sure to keep a note of which serial port you plug the cable in to.

2) Once attached, open the PageGate Admin program and go to Connectors -> Dialer 1 -> Settings.

3) Go to Connectors - Dialer1 - Settings.

4) In the settings of Dialer1, type the following in the Init string and click on Apply: direct

5) Leave the Dialing Prefix Blank, leave the Dedicated Carrier set to None, and make sure that the Serial Port is set to whichever serial port you plugged the cable into.

6) Put a checkmark in Direct Connect and click on Apply.

7) Right click on the Carriers section, left click on Add Carrier.

8) You can name the carrier whatever you wish, though I would recommend using a naming convention that is fairly straightforward (Example: SBCDirect, SprintDirect, etc).

9) Leave the Protocol Set to Tap, the Failover set to None, and the Phone Number blank.

10) Change the Baud Rate, Parity, Stop Bits, and Data Bits to reflect your Tap Terminal's settings. If you're unsure of these settings, please contact your Terminal's manufacturer for further information.

11) In the init string, type the following: direct

12) Change the Max Characters to reflect the Maximum number of characters your Terminal can handle in a single message, specify any password, or message limit that your terminal has, and be sure to put a check mark in Drop non-printable characters.

13) Click on Apply.

How do I configure an SMTP Carrier in PageGate?

To set up an SMTP carrier in PageGate, you'd want to do the following:

1) In the PageGate Admin, go to the Connectors section.

2) In the Connectors section, go to Global and under Global go to SMTP.

3) In the Local Domain section, you'd want to input the latter part of your email address, the part after the @ sign.

4) Leave PostMaster blank.

5) For the next section, you may need to contact your network administrator if you're not sure what to do here. Basically, you need to know if you have to relay all of your email through a local server of if you can deliver mail through your DNS. If you can deliver your mail through DNS, find out what your primary and secondary DNS entries are and enter those into DNS Server 1 and DNS Server 2. If you have to use a relay, make sure to put the check mark next to Relay All Mail, then enter in the relay server you were given into the Relay Server box.

6) Click on Apply.

7) Once you've done that, simply right click on Carriers, left click on Add.

8) Name the Carrier SMTP.

9) Set the protocol to SMTP and click on Apply.

How do I update my copy of NotePager Pro to the latest installation?

How do I update my copy of NotePager Pro to the latest installation?

1) Using the Windows explorer, browse to the c:\program files\notepager pro\ directory.

2) In that directory, you should see a NPP.mdb file. If you have system set NOT to show you the extentions to file types, you'll see a file that is named NPP and the icon of the file will be a Microsoft Access File.

2a) If you want to view the extentions to files, which is highly recommended, you'll want to go to Tools -> Folder Options.

2b) In the Folder Options, go under the View Tab.

2c) UNCHECK "Hide extensions for known file types" and click on OK.

3) Make a copy of this file somewhere on your computer, preferrably to your My Documents folder or the root c:\, somwehere easily to remember.

4) After you've made a copy of the database, uninstall NotePager Pro.

5) During the installation, it will prompt you if you want to remove all files, tell it yes.

6) Reboot the computer.

7) Once the computer comes back up, you'll want to visit our website: http://www.notepage.net

8) Click on the Download button under the NotePager Pro section.

9) After the file has been downloaded, run it.

10) This will take you through the installation for the latest version of NotePager Pro, including any patches we've released since you originally installed the program.

11) After you install the latest version of NotePager Pro, run the program once. Skip or cancel all of the wizards it prompt you to, then close the program.

12) After you've closed the program, go back to your Windows Explorer.

13) Find the copy of the NPP.mdb file that you made, whether you put it in your root c:\ or My Documents folder.

14) Copy this file directly into the c:\program files\notepager pro\ directory. It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file, say yes.

15) Once you do that, run NotePager Pro again. Everything should be restored and fully functional.
