I am having trouble connecting using the TAP protocol. I have used all the wizards and everything looks great until.... I can hear it connect and this is the message I keep getting.

I have tried some trouble shooting. I can dial the receiving number and hear the high piitched squelch.

Please help!!

What is the make and model of your modem?

What init string did the program choose for your modem (found under carrier settings)?

What settings are you using for the baud, parity, etc. (found under the carrier settings)?

What phone number do you have the carrier set to dial?

My modem is Conexant HSF V92 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem

Init String: AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=V22,0

Protocol: TAP
Number to dial: 529-2499 (area code 585 I do not use the area code)
Baud: 1200 (Have tried them all)
Parity: Even
Data Bits: 7
Stop Bits: 1

I hear it dial, but do not hear the high pitched squelch.

If I dial the number directly I hear it.

Unfortunately I think you are in the same situation as the post with the subject 'unable to page'.

Here is the most recent post from there:

Newer Dell computers typically come with Conexant V.92 modems standard. These are possibly the worst modems made for connecting to older/slower modems. The first step you should try is to get an updated driver for your modem from Dell. At the very least this should fix the probem in the modem driver that causes your computer to reboot when you access the modem. I have also seen new drivers from Dell and Conexant fix the problem of the modem connecting to older/slower modems, like the ones the paging carriers use.

If Dell can't help you, then download an updated driver from Conexant's website:
http://www.conexant.com

This is the init string you should be using:
for 300 baud
AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=B103,0
for 1200 baud
AT&FQ0V1X4&D2N0+MS=V22,0

Your last resort is to buy a 'real' modem instead of the Conexant Winmodem. US Robotics Sportster external modems seem to work best with most carriers, an are easy to install because they are external.
